Awakening Fire: Learn the skill and magic of friction fire
Most people have an intrinsic curiosity and fondness for the element of fire. Particularly the "Old Way" of friction fire! Let's ignite this spark by bringing life to this skill and the magic that rubbing two sticks together can bring.
This class will teach you all of the basic knowledge necessary to make a fire by friction with your own bow drill kit using materials collected locally from the natural world.
This program will require lots of focused energy to be able to create and use a friction fire kit. You will learn what qualities of materials you are looking for, sustainable harvest, cordage options for varying survival situations, carving effective shapes, form and technique to create a "coal", tinder bundle essence and options, and lastly, the art of tending a fire.
Due to the nature of carving in this process, having a sharp, non-serrated knife is REQUIRED for this class. Err on the side of a smaller blade (~4” in length). A comfortable handle is a must. “Leatherman” style tools will not work.
We will be spending significant time outside regardless of the weather. We encourage you to be prepared for all types of weather and bring several layers (to stay warm and dry) so that you can be comfortable throughout the class.
Personal facilities for your use include several port-a-potties, along with drinkable water.
No meals are provided with this program. Please bring a sack lunch and snacks. We do not have any way for you to refrigerate or heat your food, so please plan accordingly.
